Somewhere around 2014~2016, after I'd taken my first shot at writing Imperatora during 2013's NaNoWriMo, I decided to try my hand at making a narrative-driven video game in the style of Banner Saga, telling Imperatora's story.
I enlisted my friend Iza, who was doing some digital art at the time, to do some portraits. I also commissioned an artist off of Deviant named Moy to do some backgrounds. I was, of course, writing the script, doing the game design, art direction and doing all the programming.
Here are a couple of my favorite drawings of her's (and my favorite background from Moy's—a sinkhole—as this blog's image).
I made a sketch of a ghul that Iza colored in for me - the early version, with less threatening claws.
Iza also took a stab at her interpretation of the Imperatora, which I still completely love.
While I completed or prototyped many of the game's systems, I never finished the project. Showing off the game and my code during an interview in 2016 helped me land an amazing job, but after that, I lacked the time and energy to go any further with it.
Still, it's crazy to think of how things evolved. I wonder where they'll be in another 5, 10, 15 years...
